"A Color." 2012.<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">There are so many things I love about this <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">video.
The tones of black and white occasionally flashing into color, the
grids, the boxes, the expressionless faces, <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">the performers who seem<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> to have come out of a painting by Khnopff, their elegant clothes, and of course, the smooth
beauty of the minimal music. I'm also <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">fascinated by the atmosphere of metaphysical dread, the airless claustrophobi<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">a, the mausoleum-like room, the sense of <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">ritual outside the bounds of earthly existence.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Tropic of Cancer is basically a solo project by Camella Lobo, assisted in live performances by Taylor Burch, of Dva Damas (another band worth mentioning at some point). Initially, TOC was a duo with Juan Mendez, but they quickly outgrew each other, and Camella continued alone. Accurately described by The Quietus as "excessively morbid and dark," Tropic of Cancer's music relentlessly and repetitively embraces a mood of bleak, hopeless despair. That's one part of the experience. The other part, which is important, is that the music is also glamorous, lush, romantic, and <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">serenel<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">y decadent. It's not for everyone's taste, but gentle brokenhearted souls will feel <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">like they belong there. Also for fans of minimal electronic, drone, shoegaze, postpunk, ambient, darkwave, and goth.
"Gallowdance." (2013)I came across this as I randomly stumbled through various blogs on Tumblr, eventually finding myself on some posts of exceedingly dark music. There was Larissa Iceglass, with her Louise Brooks hair, dressed in black, and a noose around her neck. I was immediately hooked. But what would it sound like? It sounded like some of the best post-punk, coldwavey stuff since the early 80's. It had everything that chilled my heart; the metronomic drum machine, the bass playing straight eighths, and the repeated, almost dissonant guitar riff. Larissa swings her arms and shuffles her legs back and forth like some mindless puppet, singing like a 21st century version of Nico. In other words, they nailed it. Lebanon Hanover has not revived post-punk, but they have taken its corpse, propped it up in a chair, and invited it to dinner. How they manage to do this and not come off as a ridiculous gimmick is beyond me. I'm sold. Lebanon Hanover is the real deal.
Last year's collaborations with SOPHIE have resulted in some finished work finally being released, and it's pretty stunning. Plus, she has taken business into her own hands and started a label, Vroom Vroom. She's a Bosslady now, and I think that was a really good move on her part.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">In this new song, you can really sense the collaboration of the pair. The arrangement and treatment of how the song comes across is pure SOPHIE, while the sassy lyrics and harmonic content is very Charli indeed.
Recently I have gotten hundreds of hits. I wonder what people are looking for? They must be so disappointed.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">As always, I preface my list by saying this is a very personal list, not necessarily the "best," or "most important" music of the last year. I don't even know what's good anymore. If I'm even a bit familiar with what's on other year-end lists I usually find it's something totally dreadful and dull. And we won't even talk about the Grammys.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Still on my list from last year, Charli XCX. I continued listening to her a lot this year, even searching out her old albums and unreleased rarities hosted on obscure blogs. I continue to adore her because she's badass, angry at the right things, but also because she has so much positive energy, she's so "real," intelligent, funny, sensitive, and vulnerable. Also, <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">she can't dance (try as she will), which makes her such an endearingly under-choreographed performer. I <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">had so much respect for her last year when she quit a successful tour <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">because she couldn't find the <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">peace of mind for songwriting while on the road<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">. That <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">clearly demonstrated<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> she's first and foremost a composer.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Here's a little something from last year that<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> she hasn't recorded yet. Charli only busts it out for her live shows and it's quite something as you shall see (it actually sta<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">rts 39 sec <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">in<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">):
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I fully embraced Ringo Deathstarr this
year. It was hard at first to reconcile how they combine the dense
seriousness of the Shoegaze thing with their sort of stoner goofiness,
but in the end I was won over. Respect to all members of the band but,
in my opinion, Alex should be the only one doing vocals. Just saying...

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Wolf Alice / No Joy. I still get these two bands confused because I listened to their albums back to back repeatedly. They are both female-fronted, guitar based bands that compose songs of Pop catchiness with a noise-rock approach. Both albums have great guitar tones, and they know how to arrange for the basic two guitar, bass, and drums ensemble.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Gwenno. I was a big fan of the retro girl group, The Pipettes, of which Gwenno Saunders was a member. Who'd have imagined that she would eventually release an album sung in Welsh, with songs about politics based on a sci-fi novel, titled Y
Dydd Olaf? Who'd have imagined that such an album would be so beautiful and rapturous? Or that it would be s<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">uch an<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> artistic success that it would be nominated for the Mercury Prize? Life is full of surprises. Sometimes they're even good.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Lana Del Rey<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> - Honeymoon. Remember when LDR first emergered? People weren't sure what to make of her. Was she for real? A parody? Delusional? Genius? Brain damaged? After Dan Auerbach produced Ultraviolence, he went on record about how brilliant she is to work with. Since then, she's considered a rare and ineffable "artiste," now taken seriously beyond reproach. I hate that about the music industry. After "the big rock guy" endorses the female musician, everybody breathes a sigh of relief, and decides she's legit after all. Honeymoon is a somber affair, full of faded, atmospheric regret and tragedy, more wistful than the darker Ultraviolence, yet still another masterpiece of vision.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Rose McDowell - Cut With The Cake Knife. Rose's demos for the what was supposed to be the second Strawberry Switchblade album saw the light of day almost 30 years later. The tracks do in fact sound like demos, although they're very nicely done, and they have an 80's datedness to them due to the available technology of the time. Make no mistake however, this is a delightful, charming, most wonderful album, I treasure every second of it. Rose, that sweet, beautiful, enigmatic creature, dressed like a dominatrix, singing like an angel, and making some of the most delicious pop music ever recorded. Truly, this a joy.
A magnificent work that, despite excellent reviews, just kind of disappeared without further mention. I sought out Campbell's LoneLady album, Nerve Up (2010), and was really impressed with her 21st century evocation of early 80's post punk. Julie keeps a very low profile, but eventually I saw that her new album, Hinterland, was released, and I jumped on that immediately.

Hinterland is simply amazing. Campbell has a stunning feel for rhythm. Credit is given to Andrew Cheetham for "drums," but Julie is listed as playing about a half dozen vintage drum machines and pads, and what is evident from the outset is that her programming of those drum machines is what gives the album a lot of its personality. She plays guitar too, and the interplay of the machines and her snappy guitar playing is full of tight, twitchy, nervous energy. That energy is invigorating, fascinating, and full of surprises, coming at you from the right and left, at unexpected moments between the beats. Then, there's the LoneLady voice, gentle yet anguished, subtle but not without an edge, both reflective and urgent.

Julie has immense skill as a composer and a remarkable vision as an artist. I'm willing to follow her wherever her imagination takes her.
Jason Jr. (2015).Jason Jr. by Jason Bourgeois
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Jason Bourgeois (Northampton, MA) has been in a few bands, the pop group Bourgeois Heroes, the garage band The Novels, and Quiz Kids. He's established a connection with the reputable label, February Records, which has released some of his music with these bands. Now he's released a solo album on Bandcamp, called Jason Jr. <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">It's a charming collection of Indiepop tunes, referencing the sound of the 70's, with influences from Nilsson, Laura Nyro, David Ruffin, and Todd Rundgren (now there's an imaginary supergroup for you!).

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I would add Brian Wilson to the list of Jason's inspirations, because there is an element of Wilson's taste for unique instrumentation and harmonic surprises, popping up in songs like "Waiting Around," and "Someone From A Long Time Ago."

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">When I think about the 70's, I'm astounded at the number of sub-genres that suddenly emerged: prog, punk, disco, glam, southern rock, AOR, folk rock, and the cult of the sensitive singer-songwriter. The 70's were also cursed with dozens of really annoying pop singles, each one worse than the one before. Jason doesn't really fit in with any of those. There were just a few musicians already mentioned, like Todd Rundgren (in his "Runt" incarnation) and Harry Nilsson and, I suppose, a handful of others, who were not pretentious enough to be considered "arty," but who wrote with the tact and skill that made you cherish their music, even after New Wave, the New Romantics, and The Police came along to obliterate all that. This is the neighborhood where Jason Bourgeois lives.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Jason's songs are sweet, and he has that vulnerable, "nice guy" voice that some might describe as "twee." That's not a bad thing on this blog, as we categorically abhor all screamers, shouters, and shriekers. This is the kind of thing one would have heard on the soundtracks of After School Specials; stuff that was done well enough to sound more or less contemporary in the early 70's, but also kind of unhip if you were into, say, maybe King Crimson or Genesis.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">But this is not some imitative pastiche. I feel Jason's heart is in his songwriting. He knows what he's doing and he plays to his strengths.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">For a long time now, the "bedroom producer" has been able to easily achieve
the seamless synchronization that is such a temptation for anyone using
a PC to record. One of the things I like about this album, is that
Jason is having none of that digital perfectionism. It is a solo album, but Jason enlisted
seven other musicians to contribute (besides the usual drums, bass,
keys, and guitar) xylophone, recorder, and electric sitar. He recorded everything live, with minimal overdubs, so the performances have an
appealingly loose, in-the-moment, feel.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Jason Jr. is for fans of The Cowsills, or The Partridge Family. OK, so there are no fans of those bands anymore, but that's kind of the hidden point here. Jason miraculously and accurately evokes a period of pop music that would have been reviled by the cool kids at the time. N<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">ow, as grown ups, those same kids <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">would get teary-eyed by this music bringing them back to what eighth grade really felt like. One may have crafted an elaborate fantasy life listening to "Watcher of the Skies," but when you hear "My Best Friend," it's like getting punched in the gut with all the anxiety you endured in middle school. Jason seems to tap into those awkward moments, the things you wanted to say, the stuff you wanted to make happen, but were too messed up socially to finesse.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Spend time with this album and you'll encounter time machines that take quarters, lemonade stands, Mellotron flutes, harpsichords, choruses built on a girl's name, and the idea that love is more valuable than money. Sound naive? Maybe, but I'll take it over the mostly snarky, self-reflexive, sarcastic, and overcompressed bilge that fills the radio waves these days.
Although trained as a classical composer, I was never able to write a pop/rock song until I figured out what I wanted it to sound like. If I had a band I would want it to resemble a super-group collaboration, including members of Cocteau Twins, Lush, and My Bloody Valentine. So I simply wrote a song that emulated that, which was Befallen, and that's kind of how I've been writing music for the last six years.m farleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01705765528505144876noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7683406160892014469.post-21284622646620842802015-04-30T10:31:00.002-07:002015-04-30T10:31:58.258-07:00TricotI don't know if this band would be considered alternative, prog, math, j-pop, j-rock, or whatever. But they are completely compelling. I found out about them from an article and interview that Laura Snapes wrote for the NME.
Julia (1988).

I found out about Asylum Party from a link posted by Dee Dee Penny on some social media site I follow her on. It makes sense that the head Dum Dum Girl would want to share this, as it seems to be generally in the same realm of chilly enchantment as some of her work on Too True. Asylum Party was completely unknown to me, so it was a real treat to hear this captivating song. Asylum Party lasted during the second half of the 80's and was apparently one of the best bands to come out of the French "Coldwave" genre. Coldwave was a term initially coined by Sounds magazine to describe Kraftwerk, but it soon evolved to describe dozens of obscure French and Belgian post punk bands in the early 80's. I've started listening to some Coldwave compilations, and AP is by far the most tuneful and harmonically satisfying of them all. I'm guessing vocalist Thierry Sobézyk was the main composer. Whoever it was, they really had a skillful touch for writing haunted, uncanny songs.

Asylum Party doesn't have a Web site, their music is not available on iTunes or eMusic, and their CD's are pretty scarce, having been out of print for some time. Amazon sells them new or used starting in the $40 range, and the vinyl goes way over $200. Or you can just visit some of those shady blog sites that host mp3's, and pray your antivirus is up to date.

Even though their vintage is a bit later, they share a slightly Goth-y, undead eeriness with some other post punk bands, such as Siouxie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, Joy Division, The Cure, and even early Cocteau Twins.

Their 1989 video, "Misfortunes?," certainly plays up the phantasmal atmosphere:

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">I'm very uncertain about the cover art of the debut album by Alvvays, it just doesn't seem right. Other than that, I am really liking this Canadian band, led by Molly Rankin. It's smart Indie Pop, with the energy of the 80's version of the genre, but refreshed enough to be contemporary. It might not be groundbreaking, but they craft good tunes and arrange them with skill. It's pretty challenging to emulate a style that has already peaked without giving you that deflated feeling that you've heard it before, and done better. Even some of the more recent critically acclaimed Indie Pop bands seem flat to me. Alvvays nails it and sounds like the real thing. The lyrics are worth listening for, and the instrument parts enhance the song and are well thought out.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Personally, I am so tired of performers and bands putting on a "show." Alvvays is pretty cute as a band, but they're unpretentious and just get down to business. All jangle, no spangle. Let's have more of this.
Ultraviolence (2014)

I thought I'd give a listen to LDR's new release, Ultraviolence. I found Born To Die interesting and was curious as to what she had devised as a follow up. I did not expect to be knocked on my butt by a major work of art. Ultraviolence is a massive, immersive experience. It's full of guilt, regret, arrogance, pain, longing, and a certain type of sour beauty. I guess you could just play this in the background while tidying up your house or something, but for me it demanded the attention of a David Lynch movie, drawing me in deeper and deeper, filling me with the underlying anxiety that something tragic and disturbing was about to happen.

Ultraviolence can't be thought of as just a new collection of pop songs by Lizzie Grant. It's an artwork that completely integrates sound, lyrics, and performance to create a vision of a world both glamorous and grim. It's very Baudelairean in it's evocation of the old Spleen and Ideal concept.

The sound on this disc is magnificent. LDR's voice and the instruments are processed through a variety of reverbs and delays, so the music exists in these lush and expansive spaces, but every detail glimmers like a spark. Some of the guitar sounds are so present, you'd swear guitarist/producer Dan Auerbach was right in the room with you.

By the time I heard the third track on the album, "Shades of Cool," I knew I was in the presence of a masterpiece.
I Was Gonna Cancel (2014).The best song on Kylie's new album is probably "I Was Gonna Cancel," by "The Best Dressed Man in the World," Pharrell. It almost makes me want to forgive him for being a part of the "Blurred Lines" debacle of last year. I said, "almost."

It's similar in form to his current smash hit, "Happy." The formula is, "I got four chords that sound dope together, so let's run them into the ground." Luckily, you don't get tired of hearing those four chords over and over because, well, they actually do sound as great as he thinks they do. Apparently, Pharrell wrote this as Kylie was having an attack of anxiety about the session and thought she might have to cancel.

Lyric videos have grown up; this one is pretty spectacular:

Here's the Dance Off version of "IWGC," with Kylie, her dancers, and what appears to be a random assortment of just plain folk. It's cute.

And just to be complete, here's the final, Official video. Someone said this may be the cheapest (as in, least expensive) video that Kylie has ever made. That's probably true, but I think she intentionally went for the simplistic look of white blouse, jeans, and her hair down because (like Bowie) she never does anything that's not well thought out. (Not sure about the high-waisted jeans here, but I know that's a current trend, so there you go:)
This epic retrospective of the Seattle based label, Jigsaw Records, contains 48 tracks on two CD's. The compilation runs the gamut, demonstrating the wide range of what Indiepop can be, from lo fi, garage-y punk pop, to sweet, soft melodies. You won't already own any of these tracks, even if you are a fan of the label, because Chris McFarlane made a special effort to obtain rare or unreleased tracks by all the bands he's worked with over the years. It's a cliché, but there really is something here for everybody. You'll find tons of catchy tunes, and witty lyrics, that will put a smile on your face. I am very proud to be a part of this myself, having contributed one of my previously unreleased songs, "No Place to Go," as the second track on CD2. Only 500 CD's were pressed, so this will probably become a collector's item. You can also visit Jigsaw for lots of stuff from other labels since they are a distributor of: "indiepop, power pop, indie rock, lo-fi pop, twee, and
pretty much any other kind of fun pop music that we fancy..." m farleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01705765528505144876noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7683406160892014469.post-1055150656289104052014-05-22T15:02:00.000-07:002014-05-22T15:09:34.008-07:00Slowdive 2014

When we think back to the Shoegaze era, many of us mourn the fact that some of our favorite bands will never reconvene. Cocteau Twins had just started their own label and bought a studio space when they broke up over irreconcilable differences in 1997. Lush called it a day after the tragic loss of drummer Chris Acland in 1996. Emma Anderson later formed Sing-Sing, but Miki Berenyi just disappeared (breaking the hearts of countless shoegaze fanboys, no doubt, who had massive crushes on her), until last year's surprise appearance with Hard Skin. However, some dreams came true: My Bloody Valentine toured and recorded brilliant new material in 2013 after a 20 year absence. Now Slowdive is on a huge tour this year, and may record again as well.

Slowdive only produced 3 albums, but Rachel and Neil started Mojave 3 after the Slowdive breakup in 1994. Rachel released a solo album in 2004, Waves Are Universal. Apparently, the reformed group is sounding good live, and getting some serious love from fans and critics. For those of us who are old enough to remember, the real rivals of The Beatles during the early days of the second British Invasion were The Dave Clark Five, and time has certainly favored the former of the two in that battle of the bands. The thing that really bothers me though, is the stereotype of the Stones as the rockin' bad boys and The Beatles as charming pansies. So, let's test that theory with these performances from the 60's (and I promise I won't even bring up "Helter Skelter"). I think the Stones' performance is completely live, while the Beatles video has live vocals and the instruments on tape.

The Rolling Stones: "Lady Jane."

And now, "Revolution," from The Beatles:

So, that's that. There is even a new book by John McMillian called, Beatles vs. Stones, which I haven't yet read, but plan to. By the way, I'm not trying to take anything away from the Stones. I think their (Jagger and Richards') observations on society and class were more acute than The Beatles' ("19th Nervous Breakdown," "Mother's Little Helper,"even "Satisfaction"). But after the firing and death of Brian Jones, the Stones sort of became their own tribute band, especially after Sticky Fingers.
Too True (2014).Over the last couple of weeks I've bought every release by Dum Dum Girls. The lo-fi aspect of Dee Dee's earlier work sounds practically experimental in nature. Without vocals or drums, some of those early tracks could almost be mistaken as something by Christian Fennesz.

The new album by Dum Dum Girls, Too True, is slick, glamorous, and lush, filled with reverberant magic spaces. More glaze than daze.

Dum Dum Girls evoke a few things at the same time: I hear Phil Spector, the Ronnettes, 70's punk, and some 80's Indie Pop. Dee Dee prefers the Stones from the Brian Jones era, which I am totally sympathetic with. I love how Kristin Welchez decided to become a character, which she would call Dee Dee Penny, who plays in an imaginary band called Dum Dum Girls, before she even had a band.

Anyone who's followed Dum Dum Girls from the beginning is aware of Dee Dee's development from bedroom 4-tracker, to signing to Sub Pop, to fronting a full touring band, to performing on <a href="http://">major network TV (Letterman). You've no doubt loved the dichotomous nature of her work: innocent/gritty, sunny/dark, tuneful/noisy, retro/au courant. Too True is a major leap forwards, which might not please her oldest fans, but I appreciate her desire to create something as rich and sophisticated as she did with this album.

Here's a good example of Dum Dum Girls' love of opposing points of view, from the 2010 debut album, I Will Be. They dance (kind of) on a summery, psychedelic beach. The video is full of overexposed, pretty pastel colors; but they are dressed as if for a funereal, in black leather and lace:

Here is the title track from the new album. It's so swoony and alluring (both the video and the song); almost sounding like Cocteau Twins meets The Cure, mixed with some late period Siouxie and the Banshees thrown in for extra enchantment, and there's nothing wrong with that.
California Nights (1967).I've always loved Lesley Gore. Disco InfiltratorA friend of mine (Hi Jayne!) heard this on the radio and wanted to share it with me. I'm not an expert on LCD Soundsystem, but I really appreciate James Murphy's work. A lot of his music sounds like a parody of something you've already heard, a bit of post punk, a bit of New Wave, but it's so well put together that it's fresh and irresistible. I find the humor and vulnerability in his work very endearing.

Murphy speaks in this interview on how he experienced a life of failure before going into psychotherapy. He forgets to mention how he turned down an invitation to write for Seinfeld just before it became a global phenomenon; that was a biggie. But eventually he was able to play Madison Square Garden with his band, before he broke it up. In typical fashion, he thought that was perhaps a big mistake, after the fact, of course.
Here's the song that he refers to in the interview: "Losing My Edge":
Let's watch the band as they start their day when, later that night, they will be playing at what appears to be the Bowery Ballroom (I think this really captures the ambiance of downtown):
But both Sting and Andy Summers had had a strong background in jazz, which is evident from their sense of phrasing, timing, and interest in harmony.

Here, Sting and Andy play a bit of jazz with Jools Holland. I would guess this is from 1981 while The Police were recording Ghost In The Machine in Montserrat.

Let's never overlook how wonderful BMX Bandits are. Kurt Cobain said they were the only band he would ever join if he were not already in Nirvana. And he was dead serious.

Still led by Duglas T. Stewart through various personnel changes, the Scottish band has been in business for over 25 years. A documentary, Serious Drugs, was made about them a few years ago. The title comes from one of their most famous songs (which actually refers to the antidepressant variety, not the recreational).
label, Shiny Happy Records, called The Beauty Editors (SHR 18). For the most part, the inspiration came from the baroque chamber pop I heard on AM radio from 1966 through 1967, such as the Beatles, and the Beach Boys, of course, but also The Left Banke, The Association, and The Hollies, as well as the the quirky type of retro pop released on el Records, and the Compact Organization in the '80's.
